The company laid on a trip for us all to go to see a local traditional dance, Kathakali. It was free so who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth. Any excuse to get off the roof. It was beginning to feel like the chair on the roof was surgically grafted to my arse.
We were herded into a small room and once all settled in we were in complete darkness (I think this was to add to the (non existent) tension). Then the PA system kicks in almost piercing my eardrums. An Indian man regals a story in broken English about where the dance originates from and how the story is about love and jealousy culminating in the devil chopping off a ladies tits (I may be paraphrasing slighting).
The lights then came up and on the stage was either a bloke in drag or a woman who had had the shittiest life ever. Her face was utterly terrifying. I will have nightmares for days. We were then told that she will show us how she dances with her eyes. What the fuck??? For 10 minutes this he/she rolled his/her eyes to the sound of deafening music. She then expresses emotions with her hands. Love, envy, etc etc.
It was utterly torturous. This went on for about an hour. An hour of my life which I will never get back. I would have nodded off if it weren't for the fact that it sounded like a marching band were crashing cymbals around my ears. It got slightly more interesting when a bloke arrived on the stage (presumably the devil). He looked like a green Eamon Holmes, which made me giggle, but quite possibly I was just delirious by this stage.
It is all over now (thank the lord) but I'm not sure that I will ever be the same again!!!
